Choosing Between the Majors You’re Already Considering
What’s actually taught, and what does that job actually involve? No clichés — just concrete ways to find out.
By this point you’ve usually already answered the “which major suits me” question — you’ve got two, three, maybe four programs in mind. The real difficulty starts now: what’s actually taught in these programs? What does the job actually look like after graduation? Lines like “develops analytical thinking” on a program’s website don’t answer either question.
This piece is about how to genuinely see inside each of your candidates before you choose between them.
Curriculum or career? Two different questions
You need to research two separate things, and mixing them up is the most common mistake:
What’s actually taught?
Which courses will you take over four years, what do they cover, and which skills do you actually build?
What do graduates actually do?
Which sectors and roles graduates end up in — which is often quite different from what the program’s name suggests.
One example: an industrial engineering graduate may never set foot on a factory floor; they’re often working as a process analyst at a bank, a data analyst at a consulting firm, or a logistics planner. The program’s name doesn’t tell you the job — you have to research both separately.
Read the course list, not the brochure
University program pages are marketing copy. The real information lives in the curriculum (course plan) page.
Search “[program name] curriculum [university name],” or go directly to the relevant faculty page and look for “course plan” or “program of study.” Most universities publish this as a PDF.
What to look for:
- The names of first- and second-year required courses — these show the program’s day-to-day reality, not the upper-level electives.
- Short course descriptions — most catalogs include a two-to-three-line summary for each course.
- Is there a required internship, and how long is it, and in which term?
- How much lab, studio, or workshop time is built into the schedule?
Compare the same program across different universities. A program with the same name can look quite different from one university to another — one might be far more theoretical, another far more hands-on. Comparing your 2–3 candidate programs across 2–3 different universities’ curricula gives you a much more realistic picture.
What the job actually involves: learn it from the inside
Talk directly to graduates. Send a short, polite message on LinkedIn to someone who graduated from the program — a stranger — and ask for a 15-minute conversation.
- “What does a typical day or week look like for you?”
- “What percentage of what you learned in school do you actually use at work?”
- “Would you choose this program again? Why or why not?”
Shadowing. Spend a day or half-day next to someone doing the job, watching what they actually do. Family connections, family friends, neighbors — don’t underestimate these. Does a lawyer’s day consist mostly of courtroom time or paperwork? How much of a software engineer’s day is meetings versus actually writing code? Only observation answers these questions.
Internships. Landing a formal internship in high school isn’t always possible, but asking companies or family contacts directly for a short, unpaid observation placement often works. Once you’re in college, summer internships are the clearest way to see the gap between a program’s brochure version and its real version.
Summer school and short university programs. Many universities run short (one- to four-week) summer programs in specific fields. The point isn’t collecting a certificate — it’s experiencing the actual content with a real instructor for a week and answering “does this genuinely interest me?” Trying this separately for each of your 2–3 candidate programs makes comparison much easier.
Professional associations and bodies. Many professions (engineering chambers, bar associations, medical and accounting associations) publish public reports on current working conditions, pay ranges, and sector distribution. These reports give you a wider picture than any single person’s story.

Doing the research together, as a family
A family’s most valuable contribution is usually its network — “a colleague of mine graduated from this program, want to talk to them?” is worth more than any open house.
What a family can concretely do: not answer on the young person’s behalf, but open the curriculum page together, and help track down a graduate to talk to.
In the end, you’re not left with “which one sounds cooler,” but “I’ve seen what this actually involves, day to day, and I want to keep going” — a decision built on what you’ve actually seen.
